Learning to Rig in ToonBoom Harmony!

Recommended Posts

Hey folks!  I've been spending a bit of time learning to use ToonBoom Harmony - we have a bunch of new customers coming online who are using it, so I figured I'd better get up to speed!

Here's a first pass of him moving around & some of the controls.  I'm using the two-point constraints to control his body and his ears. I really like the volume control there!

Not thrilled with the results of his arms. There, I'm using the Curve mode of deforming. I thought it'd be nice and bendy..but when using it to animate I'm finding it tough to get exactly the feel I want. I'll probably switch to just using bones (like I am on the tail).

I'm curious if any other Harmony users are here, and if you've got a good suggestion for leg ik?

Sweet!  What are you using for your learning process? i've been going through a ton of youtube tutorials - the biggest challenge I'm finding is understanding the best way to approach various rigging challenges.  For example, I've got a character with a double-chin.  Should I put the chin on a separate layer than the face?  Should I make it part of the mouth so when I switch to a drawing with the mouth open I include the chin position? How do I handle the lower-face?

so many questions!

Same, I've been using a lot of youtube tutorials as well as video courses on the toonboom website. I'm in the same boat its definitely a challenge trying to find the best way to rig the character without over complicating it, But definitely loving the software

Haha, character looks fun. It kinda feels like the chin should move with the mouth, but also having the ability to move the mouth and chin independently if needed. Love it man, really nice line work

Cool - I’m going to see if I can start recording some tutorials on turning a 3d character into a rigged character in harmony.  It’ll be a fun process to try, considering my drawing skills aren’t the best! I’ll be using Nimble Studio, taking advantage of maya to pose the character so I have a template to draw over.

      I've recently updated my github repo with a new tool to make it easier to do breakdowns - check it out and enjoy! 🙂

      I’m working on a script to blend between two values and for some reason I keep ending up with a number that doesn’t make any sense.
      It looks something like:
      var a = 1.00; var b = 0.0113; var sum = a+b;
      the result is 1.00.0113;
      Shouldn’t I be getting 1.0113?

      View File NC_CreateNote.js
      This script takes adding a Note layer to harmony from a multi-step process to a single button click!
      The script will:
      Automatically create a drawing layer called Note (or Notes_# if there's more than one) Colors the drawing layer so it stands out from the other layers in your scene Connects the notes layer to the top of your comp stack. Automatically switches you to the pencil tool so you can start drawing immediately.

      I've put together a github repo that contains all the scripts I've written for ToonBoom Harmony - so you can get them all in a single place.
      I'll keep posting them here as well, but if you're interested in helping out, making them better, or just pulling them all at once, feel free to grab them here!
