[Maya] Anyone using mgear for rigging?

I was thinking about rigging systems and was wondering if anyone had any experience with mgear or other systems in Maya?  @Brad Clark you said you got mgear working in Nimble - can you tell us about it?

Sure, yes I got it installed in script directory for my account .. you can do all of it directly on the platform I discovered in the making of this post ? awesome!

Made  a quick getting started video here for mGear


It is a deep and powerful rigging and deformation  toolset and has had some big improvement jumps in the last few months now that the creator is getting support from his current studio to develop  it.

Support for character TD/TA and other tech and pipeline folk on the platform is an awesome, awesome step for Nimble, it seems pretty easy to achieve a basic 3rd party tool pipeline now!

Glad to see mgear in an updated form now as well! i played around with it in 2016 and thought it had tons of potential.

You know, It my be fun to start up an animation tech team on the platform. we could set up and maintain a suite of rigging, animation and other tools, for maya and others, constituting a ala-carte plug and play pipeline for Nimbel customers. could really help lelverage maya and other DCC on the platform!

I think that's a great idea @Mark Therrell!

I'd love to build out a common library of tools that people use to build rigs, set up workflows, etc.. very exciting!

Maybe there are a few of us who will be at siggraph and we can discuss in person?  Is anyone here coming?

@Brad Clark you're usually there.. but what about you @Jarom Brand?

I have been thinking about going to siggraph, I'm even registered. Just haven't purchased flight and hotel yet. But I would love to discuss this further.

Sadly i have a broken right leg!

Before that happened, I was holding onto the option to hit Vancouver for SIG,

but i'll be workinig instead, as i sit at home in the shape of an "L".

I would looove to coordinate on this though.... to me it just seems too cool !

      Does anyone know how to get a list of all the attributes that show up in the channelBox? I have something that works for transforms, but if I try it on shapes I get way more than I want. 
      This is what I have so far:

      Also If anyone has a more elegant way of stripping out parent attributes, I'd love to see it. I never like hard coding things like that.

      I was getting a TON of crashes in Maya yesterday... like nearly every 5 minutes!
      The rig i'm using is super simple, basically just a bunch of constraints. So I set my evaluation mode to serial instead of parallel, and got zero crashes.
      I know this isn't a long-term solution.. but for now, at least I can work.
      To do this, go to:
      Windows -> Settings / Preferences -> Preferences
      Click on  Animation
      Set evaluation mode to Serial.

      Ever since Autodesk included Arnold in maya, every NURBS curveShape now has these attributes:
      aiRenderCurve aiCurveWidth aiSampleRate aiCurveShaderR aiCurveShaderG aiCurveShaderB
      I like to place instanced NURBS curveShapes under controls to give animators access to the same attributes across multiple controls, say a fk/ik switch. So, to clean things up, I will lock and hide those new attributes and add my own:

      For the most part this works great, but those attributes that I locked and hid will randomly pop back into the Channel Box on their own. 

      I assume it has something to do with Arnold plugin and that its putting them back, but I'd like to stop that from happening. Any Ideas?
